Fordított Madonna

The reverse Madonna

A friend of mine was generous enough to take a picture of one of the jewels in his collection, so I can now present the reverse Madonna, one of the greatest Hungarian stamp rarities.

Less than 20 copies are known to exist of this very spectacular misprint. It is therefore one of the rarest and most spectacular misprints of philately in the world. In my opinion, its true rarity is not reflected in its current market price of a few tens of thousands of euros.

The Failed Match & The Failed Stamp

Hungary’s 1954 FIFA World Cup winning stamp was a failure, as the Hungarian team also failed to win. The Hungarians were certain to win (depending on their previous results against the Germans), so 2 million stamps were produced to celebrate the victory. On the night of 4 July 1954, all hope was lost and the government ordered all 2 million stamps destroyed. Some sheets were stolen that night, so the issue survived the devastation and was reborn as a rarity of European philately. The price of a single stamp is now around EUR 2000.

Hungarian Postal Stationery with Republican Coat of Arms

The Hungarian postal stationery (issued in 1919) with the 10 fillér denomiantion and Republican coat of arms is rarely seen. If Jenő Hoffmann, as an avid airmail collector, had not used several of these, they would be one of the greatest postal stationery rarities. Even so, if the opportunity arises, it is well worth grabbing and acquiring, as only 1-2 of these postal stationery change hands every year…

1916 – Hungary, Reaper with white numbers

Hungary, Reaper with white numbers, 10 fillér value. Margitsziget military exhibition overprint. There is a rarely seen “Balken” (German) trace on the upper part. Does anyone know what the correct English word for this is? Border?

1871 litho stamp

1871. Hungarian lithographed 5 kr with extreme misperforation

A small amount of misperforation is not uncommon in the Hungarian 1871 stamp issue. However, such an extreme misperforation, where 4 stamps can be seen on a single stamp, is a real rarity. This is shown here, on a lithographed 5 krajcár (type V.) stamp.

Rarity in Hungarian postal stationery

The Hungarian 102 fillér telegram card is a great rarity in Hungarian postal stationery collecting and postal history. In total, less than 20 are known, including used and unused copies.
